Nike Sportswear X Grotesk – CO-LAB09: The Pipe Dream Team

Nike Sportswear X Grotesk – CO-LAB09: The Pipe Dream Team

This season, Nike Sportswear challenged four graphic artists from around the globe to tap into their inner spirit of rivalry and a desire to crush to competition for CO-LAB 09. CO-LAB 09 is a collaborative project aimed to recruit artists to reimagine the icon for sports- the varsity jacket. The artists are given free reign to finish an entire sports package starting from assembling the team to picking a mascot and creating a fiery motto.

The first team to emerge is the brainchild of Kimou Meyer AKA Grotesk. The Brooklyn based artist looked into his city roots and formed The Pipe Dream Team which reflects all who are trying to make it in the hustle and bustle of New York City. In terms of design, Grotesk drew on basketball and baseball uniforms from the forties and fifties, infusing memorabilia such as old union worker patches and pins. The logo, flying moneybags, and mascot, a money bag ball player, all point to the ideas of game, overachieving and challenge; as well as how quickly everything earned can be lost.

As Grotesk himself puts his work in light, “Many of us gravitate to this city carrying with us big dreams and a passion to attain them…A rookie like me has to work twice as hard to prove that I belong. I wanted this team to stand for all of those who fight to make it.”

For those who are looking to make it in the city, the jacket’s motto “Hardwork Overcomes Mistakes” is a heartfelt one that weighs on the mind. If keeping the team slogan in mind isn’t enough, perhaps Grotesk’s imaginary arch rival for The Pipe Dream Team, The Wall Street Spoon Fed would strike an inspirational chord.

These jackets chock full of team spirit is available at Nike Sportswear locations nationwide this August. via freshnessmag

P-RodIII – Maloof Money Cup Limited Edition

In commemoration of today’s Maloof Money Cup in Costa Mesa, CA, Nike SB created a dope limited edition package for Paul Rodriguez’ new signature sneakers. The Nike SB Zoom Paul Rodriguez (P-Rod) III looks excellent in a clean white and black palette. The shoes have touches of red, but the special wooden box emblazoned with Paul’s John Hancock is a simple black-on-white affair with a completely removable top. A mere 30 pairs of these will be available when the Primitive Pop-Up Truck arrives at noon. via sneakernews

Ron Artest says he’s a Laker

Ron Artest says he’s a Laker

Who knows what to read into what comes out of Ron Artest’s mouth (or his Twitter page) these days, but actual real-life Ron-Ron just told a CBS Sports reporter that he is in fact signing with the Lakers.

“I’m definitely going to L.A. — to sign, yeah,” Artest said. “Lakers, Lakers, Lakers. I’m in L.A. right now. I don’t really care about the money. I’ll play there for nothing. … L.A. was very interested in me, and they got me.”

Artest says it’s a 5-year, $32 million deal. Presumably this means Trevor Ariza is gone, as he’s getting interest from the Cavs and Rockets, among other teams. Now do the Lakers still go after Lamar Odom, let him sign elsewhere?

Philadelphia B-BALL FANS!!!! Sixers bring back old logo

Philadelphia B-BALL FANS!!!! Sixers bring back old logo

In March, when the Sixers closed out the old Philadelphia Spectrum in a retro-style game against the Bulls, I know I wasn’t the only one who wished the old-school change was permanent. Following almost every NBA game almost every night on League Pass, there are certain teams that I just have a hard time watching simply for aesthetic reasons — uniforms, court, crowd atmosphere, etc. — and the Sixers are usually high on that list.

Today, Philly did the right thing and went back to the old look. The team announced they’re switching to the old logo for next season, and later this summer
