The City of Angels
This is a two-and-a-half-minute video, which was shot at night in downtown Los Angeles with a few Canon 7Ds by Copious Films who nicely edited it to Daft Punk’s music from TRON. If you don’t know, now you know!

As many of you know we’ve been working on our re-design for a while. To give you some history on our brand: When we started this project it started out at “LA.FAM” short for “L.A. FAMILY”. We were a bunch of guys blogging about happenings in Los Angeles . Like everything in life we progressed, we took on the name of KING LA and put the wheels in motion. We have now grown and matured substantially and needed a ReFresh that was more up to date. What you see now is our King LA Logo accompanied by the launch of our new Trademark “KLA”. All in all this refresh was needed and we couldn’t have accomplished it without the help of my long time friend Haythem H. aka HH, our very own Kevin G, and the one and only FP.Starke. Next will be the re-design of our store which will remain open during renovation! Once again THANK you all for the love and continued support. Keep buying our gear and we’ll keep putting out “Cool shit for Cool People”!
Peace

I see this video and it literally brings a tear to my eye. There is no doubt that “Oriol” has captured true Los Angeles street life and I couldn’t agree more with what he says “most people in LA ain’t even from LA” the outsiders will never learn that WE RUN DIS CITY!!!!
Former club bouncer and Los Angeles native Estevan Oriol got his start in the entertainment business managing tours for huge artists like “House of Pain” and “Cypress Hill” almost 20 years ago. While globe trotting with them he began his photography career taking flicks of the madness and glitter that surrounds international celebrities. When he was back home in L.A though, it was a much different story. He took his cues from the street life surrounding him. The singular dramatic black and white photos he produces are gripping, beautiful, and authentically menacing portraits of individuals fully immersed in L.A gang lifestyle. Blessed with a talented eye and a hood pass, he takes pictures in places armed with a camera where most tough guys would take a weapon. Offered for the first time to the public for free, in this exclusive interview from The Run Up, Estevan Oriol expresses his thoughts, methods, and views on approaching everyday with the hunger of a hustler who doesn’t know where his next meal will come from.

To coincide with this interview, and to continue the 10th Anniversary festivities, Upper Playground is giving away an Estevan Oriol photo of Xzibit. The photo is a black and white portrait of Xzibit, is framed and measures roughly 2 feet x 2.5 feet. To enter, all you have to do is sign up for the Upper Playground email list. If you are already signed up, then you are already entered to win. The contest is open for 2 weeks and a winner will be announced.

When it comes to representing our city Oriol is a staple to california street culture and I dont think anyone else has really shown us street life through a lens like FAMED photographer/director Estevan Oriol. Estevan will be bringing his photographic retrospective to premier Los Angeles boutique/gallery SURU. For this occassioni Oriol has also put together a special collaboration t-shirt along with limited edition photographic prints. Estevan gets set to showcase some of his most recognizable work to date and we can’t wait to see which of the homies made the cut. The exhibition will open February 1st, 2009 with a further preview of the Estevan Oriol x SURU t-shirt and interview available in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
