Nike Sportswear X Grotesk – CO-LAB09: The Pipe Dream Team

Written by @TheOnlyKingLA. Posted in Fashion, Sports

This season, Nike Sportswear challenged four graphic artists from around the globe to tap into their inner spirit of rivalry and a desire to crush to competition for CO-LAB 09. CO-LAB 09 is a collaborative project aimed to recruit artists to reimagine the icon for sports- the varsity jacket. The artists are given free reign to finish an entire sports package starting from assembling the team to picking a mascot and creating a fiery motto.

The first team to emerge is the brainchild of Kimou Meyer AKA Grotesk. The Brooklyn based artist looked into his city roots and formed The Pipe Dream Team which reflects all who are trying to make it in the hustle and bustle of New York City. In terms of design, Grotesk drew on basketball and baseball uniforms from the forties and fifties, infusing memorabilia such as old union worker patches and pins. The logo, flying moneybags, and mascot, a money bag ball player, all point to the ideas of game, overachieving and challenge; as well as how quickly everything earned can be lost.

As Grotesk himself puts his work in light, “Many of us gravitate to this city carrying with us big dreams and a passion to attain them…A rookie like me has to work twice as hard to prove that I belong. I wanted this team to stand for all of those who fight to make it.”

For those who are looking to make it in the city, the jacket’s motto “Hardwork Overcomes Mistakes” is a heartfelt one that weighs on the mind. If keeping the team slogan in mind isn’t enough, perhaps Grotesk’s imaginary arch rival for The Pipe Dream Team, The Wall Street Spoon Fed would strike an inspirational chord.

These jackets chock full of team spirit is available at Nike Sportswear locations nationwide this August. via freshnessmag

Nike Sportswear 2009 Holiday Preview

Written by @TheOnlyKingLA. Posted in Uncategorized

An early look into what’s up on deck for 2009 holiday as we take a look at some highlights which include iconic colorways making their way onto new models. The use of red and turquoise is something that has often been associated with Dutch artist Parra but little is known regarding an Air Max seen here and whether this is an official collabo, inspiration or just a coincidence. Other shoes with definite references to past drops include the HUF/DQM Air Max 90 seen now on a boot-like Air Max 90 Flywire style. Other notables are an Air Trainer 1 Chlorophyll colorway complete with forefoot strap. This whole collection is slated for a 2009 holiday release.

Union LA x Nike Sportswear Dunk High Challenge Supreme

Written by @TheOnlyKingLA. Posted in Uncategorized

Joining in on a collaborative project with its big brother (and original) store front Union NYC, Union Los Angeles are also set to drop a Nike Sportswear Dunk High Challenge Supreme. This time featuring a black colorway and on a tip similar to the Air Tech Challenge II, the shoe maintains a bright fluorescent highlight in yellow which pops pretty well against the black. Union LA is stitched on the heel with TPU straps coming up the side of the shoe in gray. Finishing things off are a subtle camo for the liner. Much like the NYC version, we assume the run will be pretty limited to these at in and around 100 pairs.

Nike Sportswear x Paul Marrot Dunk Hi Skinny Supreme

Written by @TheOnlyKingLA. Posted in Uncategorized

This summer, Nike Sportswear chose to remix Nike materials within the Nike Sportswear collection with legendary French textile designer Paule Marrot Editions. Once loved by the British royal family and Jackie Kennedy, Paule Marrot Editions has been creating memorable designs since 1920. Paule Marrot’s textiles were heavily influenced by Marrot’s early studies as a painter under impressionists such as Pierre-August Renoir, Raoul Dufy and Maurice Denis.

The pack consists of two Dunk Hi Skinny Supremes, one coming in pink glaze/white, the other one in black/mist-blue white. Today we can give you a preview of the pink sneaker.

The Paule Marrot versions of the Nike Skinny Dunk Hi will be available at select Nike Sportswear retailers as of this coming weekend.

Nike Sportswear Pinnacle Flywire Windrunner

Written by @TheOnlyKingLA. Posted in Fashion

When first previewed approximately a year ago, the Nike Pinnacle Flywire Windrunner was created merely as a showcase of Nike’s production power with no slated release date. Deemed the lightest version of the Windrunner ever and quite possibly any jacket of its kind, two versions have hit retailers. The jacket’s trademark is undoubtedly the use of Flywire through the shoulders and top half of the jacket. The weight-minimizing approach extends far into the use of material as you can tell by the relative opacity of the nylon used. Breathable holes are seen on the collar area for added ventilation. Two colors in the form of gradients leave a little to be desired with hopes of some more subtle colors on the way. Available now at select Nike Sportswear accounts that carry the Pinnacle collection.
